Cote D’Ivoire Former First Lady, Simone Gbagbo sentenced to 20 years in prison

Former first lady of Cote D’Ivoire, Simone Gbagbo, was on Tuesday sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in the 2011 post-election violence that claimed about 3,000 lives. Mrs. Gbagbo was tried with 82 other allies of her husband, former President Laurent Gbagbo.

According to her lawyer, Rodrigue Dadje, the former first lady was found guilty of crimes including disturbing the peace, organising armed gangs and undermining state security. Dadje revealed that they would appeal against the verdict by the end of the week, adding: “She is keeping her morale up since she was more or less expecting this.”
