APC lawmakers stage walk out as Senate confirms Obanikoro as Minister

Lawmakers of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have exercised their numerical advantage in the Nigerian Senate by confirming the the appointment of their former colleague, Senator Musliu Obanikoro as Minister. The PDP lawmakers went ahead with the confirmation to the displeasure of their counterparts in the leading opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC), who staged a walk out.

Senator Obanikoro was not grilled but was asked to take a bow and leave in adherence of the tradition of the Senate, where a former Senator is not asked questions but is simply asked to take a bow and leave.

The opposition Lawmakers notably from the APC valiantly attempted to ensure that the Senate does not screen Senator Obanikoro reminding the Senate that the matter is in court as such, the Senate should not screen the Ministerial nominee.

Opposition lawmakers also reminded the Senate that a precedent has been set in the Senate in the case of Taraba State where the Senate refused to confirm a Ministerial nominee because Lawmakers in the state were opposed to the appointment.

The Senate President, David Mark argued that he has not been served a court order and so the screening would hold.

The Senate consequently confirmed Senator Obanikoro as Minister prompting APC Lawmakers to stage a walk out.
